A couple weeks ago, the legendary founder of Y Combinator, Gary Tan, said that the question that decides whether your agent is a genius or a goldfish is this, who decides or what decides which three books are open on its desk. When I realised this, it completely changed the way that I think about agents. What he's talking about is context engineering.

Context engineering is building the system that decides which context your agent is exposed to at any given time. Without context, or without the right books from your library, your agent's answers are generic. If there's too much context in all the books in the library, your agent gets overwhelmed and intelligence decreases. So you need a memory system, and Gary's built one of the best in the industry.

It's called G-Brain, and he describes it as the library and the librarian. But this is different to the second brain that you've probably seen out there. What you've probably seen is a series of markdown files that are all linked to each other, and then your agent just searches across the markdown files. These systems break when you go above 500 to 1,000 files, and if you're running a business

or you're a person that's ingesting data from multiple different sources, you definitely will. G-Brain works differently. It uses something called hybrid retrieval. That means it's searching your context using two different methods. One is looking for exact keyword matches, and the other is looking for meaning matches

based on something called vector search. And this method scales for hundreds of thousands of files, so the quality of your agent's memory never degrades. G-Brain is completely free and open source. So comment brain below and I'll send you a prompt that I've made to set it up, and also to guide you through the setup so what's going on and how to make the
