No one has ever paid for an app because the code was clean. And I learned that the expensive way. Because I spent five months polishing my landing page and then found one number in my analytics that made all of it pointless. This is every version of it. Five different headlines, new layout, new animations. And every single time I was sure this was the one that would finally convert.
So guess how many people a week see this page? 80. And that's not even the worst part. With traffic that small, I can't tell if any of these redesigns works. because to measure it properly I'd need something like half a year of visitors. So I never had a design problem, I had a nobody's looking problem.
And if your app has zero users and right now you're refactoring code or adding dark mode or choosing a perfect page speed score, I get it, because nobody can judge you for that. Posting is the scary part, because that's when strangers get to judge you. So now I ask myself one question before I touch anything in the product.
Would a stranger notice this in the first 10 seconds? If not, it waits and I go past something instead. Payments and security are the exception obviously, but everything else can wait until people show up. And if someone who's redesigning their landing page for the third time right now, send this to them.
