If I could go back in time, there are two things I'd prioritize before building any of my apps. I've shipped over 15 apps and I've wasted many months learning this the hard way. Number one, post-hoc session replays. Like everyone else, I had basic analytics. I could see users churning, but I wasn't sure why. Session replay lets me see exactly what the user is doing, step-by-step, every single

day. I learned why they churned, bugs I would have never caught, and even broken UX flows or onboardings. It's the closest thing to sitting next to your user without ever having to talk to them. And then point number two is prompting for reviews. The best defense against any competitor is simply having more reviews than them. So in every app I make now, I always ask at a key moment.

But there's a trick. Don't show the native pop-up first. Rather, show your own feedback model. If they say they love the app, then you can show the native review prompt. If not, route them to a feedback form instead. That way all the bad reviews get diverted into a private feedback pool and your rating on the app store stays high. So do these two things from day one and you're miles ahead of everybody else on the app store.
