The reason your videos don't hold attention is because you're using the wrong story arc. This is what we were all taught in school, the traditional story arc. Initial conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. But on social media, with our cracked out brains, this five act story no longer works because most people scroll away before the rising action ever gets good.
because most people scroll away before the rising action ever gets good. So instead, on social media, you want to use this, the modern story arc. The modern story arc doesn't start out at zero. It starts at 70 out of 100. The first five seconds, the hook, need to feel like you're getting dropped in the middle of a story that's already started. Then very quickly, in the next five to 10 seconds, you need to spike the viewer to 90
Then very quickly, in the next five to 10 seconds, you need to spike the viewer to 90 out of 100. The first peak. A contrast moment, some contrarian statement, some shocking stat, something to release that initial hit of dopamine in the viewer's brain. After 20 to 30 seconds of releasing that tension, boom, you go back up for another peak. And over and over, peak, release, peak, release, until the video is done.
And over and over, peak, release, peak, release, until the video is done. In the modern era, the climax doesn't happen in the middle of the story. Instead, you're stacking many peaks on top of each other over and over, re-hooking as long as you can. Now, if you want to improve your storytelling for the modern era, I put together this doc that has the eight most important storytelling principles.
