400 people signed up for our free trial last month, 11 paid, the rest vanished like my co-founder during a board meeting. They didn't vanish Peter, they got lost. Most trial users never reach the moment where your product solves their problem. That's the -ha moment and if they never hit it, they never pay. So how do I get them there?
With an onboarding flow that has two parts. Part one gets them to the -ha moment, part two gets them to pay, and you never start part two until part one is done, because asking someone to pay before they've seen it work is like proposing on the first date. So what's in part one?
Pick the three steps a user has to take to reach the -ha moment, then write three emails for each step, that's nine emails and each one is triggered by what the user does, not by the calendar. What does that look like?
Say someone finishes step one but skips step two, they get an email about step two, still stuck, the next one reminds them why they signed up, shows exactly how to do it with a short video, and offers help. The moment they finish, they get a congratulations and a push to step three.
Our onboarding emails are long letters about our mission. Nobody reads those Peter, not even your mom. A good onboarding email has one big headline, a progress bar, a short video of the step they're on, and a few lines of text. One email, one job.
And when do I ask for money? Right after they hit the -ha moment, that's when they're most likely to pay, because they've just watched your product solve their problem. Send your offer, an incentive or a discount, and keep going until they upgrade or the trial ends.
ends. So my users weren't cheap, they were confused. Exactly, and so were your emails, comments as, and I'll send you the full flow with every email, every trigger, and a video showing how to set it up.
