What Is TikTok Must Eat? (Restaurant Guide)
TikTok Must Eat is an in-app restaurant guide launched 28 October 2026 in New York, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. What it does, and what it cannot find.
TikTok Must Eat is a restaurant guide built inside TikTok, from what people on TikTok actually said about places to eat. It launched on 28 October 2026 in three metro areas, and Adam Presser, who runs the TikTok USDS joint venture, introduced it at a media event in New York (Nation's Restaurant News). Below: what the guide does, where it works, and the thing it does not touch, which is the pile of food videos already sitting in your own saves.
What is TikTok Must Eat?
A curated list of restaurants per city, assembled by TikTok rather than by reviewers. The parts worth knowing:
- Built from the app's own chatter. TikTok says it factors in more than 40 million posts, reviews and comments to decide which places belong (TechCrunch).
- Two sections per city. Everyday Eats for neighbourhood and affordable places, Elevated Dining for the special-occasion end (Tubefilter).
- No paying your way in. Restaurants cannot pay to be featured, independents and local specialities get priority, and TikTok checks that a place is open, operating and in good standing before it goes live (Nation's Restaurant News).
- Filters and booking. Browse by city, filter by cuisine, price, rating and location, open a restaurant page with its price range, neighbourhood, the reasons it was recommended and the related TikTok videos, and book some places through an OpenTable integration without leaving the app (Social Media Today).
- Where it lives. The search bar, the Local feed, restaurant pages, and the location tags attached to videos that feature a listed place. There is no separate Must Eat tab.
The business logic behind it is in one number TikTok likes to quote: 27 million Americans say they visited an independent restaurant, cafe or shop for the first time after seeing it on TikTok, which TikTok estimates produced 4.7 billion dollars in local spending. Must Eat is the attempt to catch that intent before it leaves for Google Maps.
Where can you use TikTok Must Eat right now?
Three metro areas: New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. TikTok has named no fourth city, no date for one, and no country outside the United States. If you are anywhere else, the feature is a headline rather than something in your app.
It is also not a standalone product. Must Eat sits inside the Local feed and extends TikTok GO, the travel and booking hub TikTok opened earlier in 2026. The direction of travel is clear enough: TikTok is building the discovery-to-booking path that Yelp and Google Maps own today, and a restaurant guide is the cheapest place to start because the recommendations were already there.
What Must Eat does not do with the food videos you saved
Here is the part the launch coverage does not cover, and it is the part that matters if your Favorites folder is mostly food.
Must Eat does let you save a restaurant: you can bookmark one into your existing TikTok collections and build a personal list that way (Social Media Today). That is a genuinely useful feature, and it works forwards, from today onwards. It does nothing for what is already there.
- It does not read your saved videos. Must Eat is assembled from public posts across the platform. The videos you personally saved are not an input to it and are not searched by it.
- It does not know what was said in a video you saved. The restaurant name in a food TikTok is usually spoken out loud, once, maybe shown on screen for a second. It is rarely in the caption and almost never in a hashtag.
- It only knows three cities. A saved video about a place in Lisbon, Berlin or Mexico City is outside the guide entirely, and those are exactly the saves people hoard before a trip.
- It is a guide, not a memory. Must Eat answers "where should I eat tonight". The question people actually get stuck on is "what was that noodle place the girl in the video kept talking about".
How to find the restaurant from a food TikTok you saved
Ordered from free and native to tool-assisted. All of these work today, in any country.
- Check the location tag. If the creator tagged the place, tapping through is instant. Many do not, and the ones who do often tag a city rather than a venue.
- Read the caption and the pinned comment. Creators who get asked the same question all day usually answer it in the pinned comment. Worth thirty seconds before anything else.
- Scrub the video with captions on. TikTok's auto-captions mean you can read rather than listen, which is faster for a name you half remember. Still one video at a time.
- Search your own Favorites by what you remember. This is where it falls apart. TikTok's Favorites filter by collection, not by content, so if you did not file it correctly when you saved it, you are scrolling.
- Use a transcript search tool. SavedThat is one: you add a video by pasting its link, through the browser extension or from the share sheet, it transcribes the speech, and a search for "that Thai place in Silver Lake" returns the moment with a timestamp. It is a search tool rather than a guide, and it only knows the videos you added to it.
| Option | What it searches | Cost | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok Must Eat | 40M public posts, three US cities | Free | Does not look at your saves |
| Location tag on the video | Whatever the creator tagged | Free | Often missing or just a city |
| Caption and pinned comment | What the creator typed | Free | One video at a time |
| Your Favorites collections | Folder names you chose | Free | Not the spoken content |
| Transcript search (SavedThat) | The spoken content, with timestamps | First 5 videos free, no card | Only videos you have added to it |
Must Eat versus the folder you already have
The numbers from our own corpus say why this gap is awkward. As of November 2026, across 70 saved TikToks with a transcript the median one runs 80 seconds and carries about 286 spoken words; across all 867 saved videos of three minutes or less, the median carries 171 spoken words. A restaurant name is one or two of those words, said once, and nothing in TikTok indexes them.
So the two things answer different questions, and it is worth knowing which one you are asking. Must Eat is good at the question with no memory attached: you are hungry, you are in Los Angeles, show me something. Your saves are the opposite: you have a specific memory and no handle on it. That second problem is the one covered in searching inside TikTok saves and in the broader guide to finding a video you saved months ago.
TikTok Must Eat is a real improvement to finding a restaurant and no help at all with finding the restaurant you already found once. If most of what you save is food, the guide is pleasant and the gap stays exactly where it was.
Facts checked on 2 November 2026 against reporting from 28 October 2026. Must Eat launched in three cities and TikTok has announced no expansion; we will update this guide when it does.

Frequently asked questions (2026)
What is TikTok Must Eat?
Must Eat is a restaurant guide built into the TikTok app, launched on 28 October 2026. TikTok assembles each city's list from more than 40 million posts, reviews and comments on the platform, splits it into Everyday Eats and Elevated Dining, and lets you filter by cuisine, price, rating and location.
Which cities have TikTok Must Eat?
New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. TikTok has not named a fourth city, has given no date for one, and has announced nothing outside the United States.
How do I find Must Eat in the TikTok app?
Through the search bar, the Local feed, a restaurant's page, or the location tag attached to a video that features a listed restaurant. There is no separate Must Eat tab to open.
Can restaurants pay to be on TikTok Must Eat?
No. TikTok says restaurants cannot pay to be featured, that independent places and local specialities get priority, and that it checks each restaurant is open, operating and in good standing before the listing goes live.
Can you save restaurants in TikTok Must Eat?
Yes. You can bookmark a restaurant into your existing TikTok collections and build a personal list that way. That works from the moment you save it onwards; it does nothing for the food videos already sitting in your Favorites.
Does Must Eat search the TikToks I already saved?
No. Must Eat is assembled from public posts across TikTok, not from your own saves, and nothing in it searches what was said inside a video you saved. To find the restaurant named out loud in a saved video you need a tool that transcribes your saves and searches the speech.
How do I find the restaurant from a food TikTok I saved months ago?
Check the location tag, then the caption and the pinned comment, then rewatch with captions on. If none of those work, the name was only spoken, and the only thing that finds it is a transcript search over your own saved videos. In the SavedThat corpus the median saved TikTok carries about 286 spoken words as of November 2026, and the restaurant name is one or two of them.
